SUSTAINABLE BUILDING LIME APPLICATIONS VIA CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND BIOMIMETIC APPROACHES

The SUBLime Network (SUstainable Building Lime applications via Circular Economy and Biomimetic Approaches) focus on developing sustainable innovation solutions for lime mortars/plasters in new construction and conservation of the built heritage.

The project covers the main features of lime-based applications in the masonry construction its innovations are focused in both added functionalities and sustainability aspects, strongly based on novel biomimetic and closed-loop recycling approaches.

Within the scope of this Research Network, this Research Training Course (RTC) will take place in Granada, Spain, from 22nd to 26th of November.

The Consortium decided to make most of the training course available to everyone, allowing to live stream the classes.

Proyecto CARC-CyL

Os presentamos un proyecto de Ciencia del Patrimonio del Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales de Castilla y León. CARC-CyL. El objetivo es lograr la correcta conservación del patrimonio cultural a través del estudio, análisis y caracterización como elemento básico en la toma de decisiones.

El objetivo final es minimizar la intervención en las bienes culturales mueble y lograr su conservación preventiva mediante la sistematización de datos analíticos para su conservación. Esto incluirá la captura de imágenes multiespectrales, iluminación, posicionamiento espacial, toma de muestras “in situ” y medición y monitorización de condiciones ambientales.

Jornada de Lanzamiento: Consulta Preliminar al Mercado.

En el marco de este proyecto se está preparando una Jornada de Lanzamiento de la Consulta Preliminar al Mercado para el Reto CARC-CYL el próximo día 19 de noviembre 2021 dentro del siguiente calendario de operaciones.

Identificación de propuestas innovadoras que den respuesta a la necesidad de sistematización de datos analíticos para la conservación de los bienes del patrimonio cultural de Castilla y León.

(LLHS) Transnational Access Provision to Research Infraestructures IPERION HS.

Transnational Access Provision by the Laser Laboratory for Heritage Science (LLHS). 25 – 29 Oct 2021.

From October 25 to October 29, we received Carla Machado, NOVA School of Science and Technology from the Conservation and Restoration Department and Vicarte Research Unit (Portugal), to provide her access to the facilities, laboratories and research expertise at the Institute of Physical Chemistry Rocasolano in Madrid. This was done via FIXLAB access to research infrastructures in the mainframe of the European Project IPERION HS.

In the framework of the study «Non-invasive characterisation of grisaille paints on stained-glass windows» there were analysed stained glass fragments and samples from different European contexts and centuries with LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy), LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) and Nonlinear Optical Microscopy (NLOM) in the modality of Multiphoton Excitation Fluorescence.

Some of the beautiful samples she brought to the laboratory.

These techniques and the scientific expertise provided by the Laser Laboratory of Heritage Science research group will allow to get information regarding the chemical composition and thickness of the grisaille paint layers in a non-destructive way, without sampling.

This access provision has been successfully provided thanks to IPERION HS. You can apply too free of charge. Next call is already open and you can apply until November 30th.

The catalogue includes access to several techniques and laboratories all over Europe in the field of Heritage Science through FIXLAB. Also there is access to mobile equipment and related competencies in MOLAB. Also access to organized scientific information in largely unpublished datasets from archives of prestigious European museums, galleries and research institutions is provided through ARCHLAB.

Conociendo la materia y jugando a construir.

En este talleres se desarrollarán diversas actividades para acercar a los jóvenes al mundo de la química y de los materiales de construcción. Las actividades programadas contemplan:
1) Conociendo la Tabla Periódica. Mostraremos como los elementos químicos están presentes en
nuestro día a día y nos divertiremos fabricando nuestros propios modelos moleculares
2) ¿Cómo construyo? Los alumnos conocerán los fundamentos de los cementos y hormigones y prepararán sus propias maquetas.
3) ¿Cómo protegemos nuestro Patrimonio? Los edificios donde vivimos y trabajamos están hechos de múltiples materiales de
construcción, materiales que hay que proteger de las inclemencias del tiempo, contaminantes, vandalismo, etc. En este taller
veremos que nuevos productos se aplican para protegerlos y hablaremos del proyecto Europeo Innovaconcrete para la protección
del Patrimonio Cultural en Hormigón.

Nerja, una cueva a la LUZ DE LA CIENCIA.

Jornada de puertas abiertas para conocer la parte más desconocida de la Cueva de Nerja y sus instalaciones científicas (estación meteorológica, biblioteca y laboratorio), habitualmente cerradas al público. En la cueva, los investigadores darán a conocer al gran público diversos aspectos que habitualmente pasan desapercibidos, como los numerosos tipos de formaciones geológicas, las especies faunísticas que la habitan y sus asombrosas adaptaciones, el importante yacimiento arqueológico y las pinturas rupestres que se dibujan en sus paredes. An overview of what IPERION HS can offer to the Palaeontology Community

 

IPERION HS and E-RIHS are organizing a series of webinars, a key source of state-of-the-art information on heritage science research, facilities, policy and impact. It contributes to developing a vibrant heritage science community and is intended for anyone involved in interdisciplinary heritage research.

 

How can #heritagescience research on Palaeontology benefit from IPERION HS services? How do we access IPERION HS techniques and archives for Palaeontology? What is needed to prepare a successful research proposal?

 

The webinar takes place online and will introduce participants to the field of Heritage Science facilities in IPERION HS, a European project devoted to building a distributed research infrastructure in the field of Heritage Science: E-RIHS (http://www.e-rihs.eu/).
The focus will be placed on what IPERION HS can offer to the Palaeontology community and how IPERION HS can answer to the heritage needs.

Marina Martínez de Pinillos González – she is graduated in Humanities (Historical Heritage) and obtained the International PhD in Human Evolution at University of Burgos. She has extensive experience in scientific-technical environments. She has worked as a scientific advisor for the collection display at the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos and as a collection technician for the Laboratory of Human Evolution at University of Burgos and for the Altamira National Museum and Research Centre, also participating in the preparation of The Times of Altamira project. She is currently working as a project manager of the ARIADNEplus (Advanced Research Infrastructure for Archaeological Dataset Networking in Europe) e IPERION HS (Integrating Platforms for the European Research Infrastructure ON Heritage Science), giving support to scientific-technical, logistical and dissemination tasks of these two European projects.

Belén Notario – She has a university degree in Physics, and a PhD in Physics, in the materials science branch (University of Valladolid, Spain). Since 2016, she is the technician in charge of the Microscopy and Microcomputed Tomography Lab at the National Research Center of Human Evolution in Burgos (Spain). Since then, she has been in charge of the direction of the laboratory and its proper functioning. In it, samples that cover different branches of science are analyzed and studied: from paleoanthropology and geology, to materials science, medicine and biology, among others.

Joaquín Arroyo-Cabrales– He is Head at the Archaeozoology Lab, National Institute of Anthropology and History.  His research focuses on Late Quaternary vertebrates and their contribution to understanding the paleoenvironments in which humans survived; in doing so, he has undertaken studies on taxonomy, biogeography, taphonomy, and paleoecology mostly on Mexican Pleistocene mammals.

PTI PAIS will be at the MetroArchaeo 2021 Conference this Thursday 21st of October. The conference will be held in person event on October 20-22, 2021, at the University of Milano.

Marta Castillejo (IQFR and PTI-PAIS coordinator) will give a keynote lecture on nonlinear optical microscopy with the title: «Measuring thicknesses in multilayer heritage substrates: a non-invasive photonic approach by nonlinear optical microscopy«. This will be at 14:30.

ABSTRACT

The study of valuable historical objects and substrates with 3D structural and chemical characterization benefits from the availability of non-invasive techniques. Particularly, determination of the thickness of constituent and degradation layers is important to evaluate artistic styles, manufacturing techniques and to select adequate conservation strategies. Nonlinear optical microscopy has been recently introduced for the analysis of multilayer and multicomponent cultural heritage substrates. Nonlinear optical signals are generated via the interaction of the material of the sample with a tightly focused infrared femtosecond laser, where the high peak power and short time duration of the laser pulses favour nonlinear optical processes without unwanted side effects such as photobleaching and/or phototoxicity. Various modalities of the technique, i.e. Multi-Photon Excitation Fluorescence and Second and Third Harmonic Generation, allow state-of-the-art, non-invasive analysis of objects and samples with intrinsic micrometric lateral and axial resolution. In this lecture, I will present examples about the characterization and thickness determination, via MPEF microscopy, of varnish and paint layers on pictorial substrates and of grisailles and corrosion layers on historical glasses. The comparison with other more conventional techniques requiring sample-taking shows good consistency and agreement and illustrates the advantages of this new photonic approach.

The word metrology has a long tradition, deriving from the Greek word for measure. The knowledge about anything is complete only when it can be expressed in numbers and something is known about it. Measurements play a fundamental role in every field of investigation and present day scientific and technological progress has resulted from progress in the field of measurements.

Metrology, the science of measurements, includes all aspects both theoretical and practical with reference to measurements, whatever their uncertainty, and in whatever fields of science or technology they occur. Consequently the field of valorisation, characterisation and preservation of Cultural Heritage too is deeply related to the metrological issues for the collection, interpretation and validation of data collected with the different analytical, physical-chemical, mechanical techniques, digital technologies, new ICT tools, etc…

Measurements deriving from the large number of analytical methodologies and tools, molecular and elemental spectroscopic techniques, chemometrics, chemical reactivity and modeling, etc., nowadays available are of interest for the conference. Data on the impacts of natural and anthropogenic environmental stressors, the decaying pathways of the different materials in the surrounding environment, the development of new remediation processes as cleaning, consolidation, rehabilitation, etc., based on the chemical knowledge can be considered.

InnovaConcrete is coming to an end by December 2021, and the final conference will be held in Cadiz, Spain, from 2nd to 4th of December 2021.

From December 2nd-4th 2021, the final conference of the project  InnovaConcrete (Innovative materials and techniques for the conservation of 20th century concrete-based cultural heritage) will be celebrated in Cadiz (Spain), where the final results and conclusions will be presented to the public.

This project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, unites experts from multiple disciplines (architecture, engineering, social sciences, experimental sciences, cultural heritage…) with the common goal of developing innovative materials and techniques to preserve concrete-based cultural heritage structures from the 20th century. The project objectives also emphasize on promoting citizen awareness towards historic concrete and defining its conservation policies.

The first day agenda includes the official presentation of the Cádiz document, the Benchmark Guidance Document for the conservation of 20th century concrete heritage, redacted by the ICOMOS Twentieth Century Heritage International Scientific Committee (ISC20C), followed by a round table and open debate where all participants are invited to contribute. In addition, Docomomo Iberico (Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement) foundation will present to the public the selection of 100 significant 20th-Century Heritage Sites in Europe database (The 100 of the 20th), based on technical, social or aesthetical criteria.

The second day of the conference is focused on presenting the innovative materials and techniques, including a session of practical demonstrations, aside from the validation results obtained in laboratory and on the 8 selected case studies, corresponding to singular constructions of European concrete heritage.

All the presentations will count with simultaneous translation English-Spanish/Spanish-English. Registration for the event is free of charge and we offer the options for in person attendance and online live streaming.

Da comienzo el curso «Patrimonio Abierto: Investigación y Sociedad», de la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) dirigido por Sagrario Martínez Ramírez, del Instituto de Estructura de la Materia (IEM) del CSIC y nuestra Plataforma, y Enrique Castaño Perea de la Universidad de Alcalá (UAH).

El curso se destina a todos los interesados en formación académica y científica en técnicas de intervención y materiales de última generación para la restauración y conservación de elementos patrimoniales. Metodologías no invasivas para la caracterización y evaluación de objetos de interés patrimonial; Diseño y síntesis de materiales de última generación para la restauración y conservación de elementos patrimoniales y nuevas estrategias de conservación, manipulación y transporte de bienes culturales.

Durará desde el 27 de septiembre al 1 de octubre y se celebrará de manera virtual, salvo el día 30 de septiembre donde se realizará una actividad en Alcalá de Henares y su universidad (UAH), Patrimonio mundial de la humanidad por UNESCO desde 1998.

  • 12:00 h. Metodología de la intervención y conservación del Patrimonio
